Font Retirements in Squarespace – What West Seattle Website Owners Should Know

If you’re running a Squarespace site and you’re based in West Seattle—or anywhere really—there’s an important update you don’t want to miss. Starting November 2025, Squarespace is retiring a long list of fonts from its library. If your site uses any of them, you’ll need to pick new ones or risk running into design issues down the line.

As a West Seattle web designer who works with small businesses and nonprofits, I’m keeping an eye on this update to make sure my clients stay ahead of any visual hiccups. If you’re managing your own site, here’s what’s happening and how to handle it.

Why Fonts Are Being Retired

Squarespace relies on third-party services to power its font library. When those services stop supporting certain fonts—or change how they deliver them—Squarespace has to retire them. Once a font is retired, it’s completely removed from the platform and can’t be used again. If you're currently using one of these fonts, it will stop working unless you swap it out.

While this might sound frustrating, Squarespace has curated alternative fonts that match the style of those being retired. That means you won’t be left scrambling to figure out what to use instead.

How to Know If Your Site Is Affected

Squarespace is doing a good job alerting site owners. If your site is using a retired font, you’ll see a notice in two places:

  • On your account dashboard, right next to the site name

  • Inside the site’s main menu, where it will say “Review retiring fonts”

Clicking the review link brings up a panel that lists the fonts you’re using that are being removed. You’ll see recommended replacements, along with the option to explore the full library if you want to choose something different.

You can also let Squarespace pick one for you with the “Choose for me” option. After you confirm your new font choices, hit Save—but know that you won’t be able to re-add the retired fonts after making changes.

The Full List of Retired Fonts

The list is long—very long. It includes many recognizable names like:

  • Calibri

  • Copperplate

  • Eurostile

  • Franklin Gothic

  • Century Gothic

  • Rockwell

  • Trade Gothic

  • Wingdings (yep, even that one)

If you want to review the complete list, you’ll find it here:

Squarespace has grouped all of the changes in one place, along with steps to help you replace fonts and make sure your site stays looking sharp.

What This Means for West Seattle Squarespace Users

For local business owners in West Seattle, this is a good moment to revisit your website’s look and feel. Fonts affect how your brand comes across—clean, quirky, bold, classic. If you’ve been using a retired font, this is your chance to update your typography to better reflect your business.

Here’s how I can help:

  • Review your current Squarespace setup

  • Replace retired fonts with modern alternatives

  • Adjust sizing and spacing to keep your layout balanced

  • Make sure mobile and tablet views still look great

  • Update any branding to match your new typography

Whether you're running a restaurant, salon, nonprofit, or neighborhood shop, I can make sure your website keeps working hard for you—even as the platform evolves.

Avoiding Common Issues

If you’ve received an email from Squarespace about font retirements but don’t see the review option in your dashboard, try disabling your browser extensions. Some extensions interfere with site editing features.

Also, if you’ve been duplicating Squarespace sites as part of your design process, be aware: if the original site uses retired fonts, the duplication might fail. You’ll need to replace the fonts first before you can duplicate the site successfully.

You don’t have to figure this out alone—and you definitely don’t have to settle for a site that suddenly looks “off” because a font disappeared.

Don’t Let a Font Change Throw You Off

Website platforms change often, and Squarespace’s upcoming font update is just one example. These updates are rarely exciting—but they’re important. Fonts play a big role in how users experience your site, and updating them the right way keeps things running smoothly.

So if you’re a West Seattle business owner with a Squarespace site, take a few minutes to log in, check your dashboard, and make sure your fonts are still supported. And if you’d like a hand making the switch or just want to future-proof your site, I’m here to help.
